All things you need to know about Menstrual cups

What is a Menstrual cup?

A menstrual cup is a feminine hygiene product that is inserted into the vagina during menstruation. The cup collects the fluid and prevents any kind of transferring onto clothes. They are mostly made of medical-grade silicone and are flexible in nature. Their bell shape and flexibility helps in stress-free insertion and removal.

How to insert a Menstrual cup?

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly
  2. Make the rim of the cup a bit wet using water or any lubricant
  3. Pinch tightly and fold the rim of the cup in half.
  4. Now insert the cup inside with the rim up and the stem out. The cup should be slightly below your cervix.
  5. Once the cup is inside, rotate it a little so it opens fully and creates a vacuum which in turn helps avoid any leaks.

How to remove your Menstrual cup?

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly.
  2. Place your index finger and thumb on the stem of the cup.
  3. Pull the stem of the cup gently until you reach the rim of the cup.
  4. Once you reach the rim, pinch the cup so you release the vaccum that had been created and gently remove the cup.

If you are interested in using a menstrual cup talk to your gynaecologist about this. Most Menstrual cups have sizes available in them. Your gynaecologist can suggest you what size menstrual cup you should opt for depending on your age, your flow and various other factors.
The Smaller cup is usually recommended to women who are below the age of 30, have a normal to medium flow and have not given natural birth. The Large cup size is usually recommended to women who are above the age of 30, have medium to heavy flow and have given natural birth.

Menstrual cups are easy to procure both online and offline. The one that I have trusted for a while is by the brand Everteen. This cup is available online in two sizes Small & Large. Made of medical-grade silicone, the Everteen Menstrual cup is soft, 100% safe and does not cause skin irritation. It also claims to provide a leak-proof protection for up to 12hours.
