5 Sunscreen Myths Busted & Current Favourite Sunscreen Review

5:08:00 PM

Hello Chicsters!

First of all, I would like to start with an apology for going MIA for the last few weeks. I was feeling a bit under the weather but I am back and will hopefully cover many more interesting articles this month.
Sunscreens have always been an important part of my skincare routine especially after an article I had read a couple of years ago which helped me bust my sunscreen myths. My today's article is focused on helping you bust some of your sunscreen myths with a detailed review of my current favourite sunscreen.

5 Sunscreen Myths Busted & Current Favourite Sunscreen Review
Myth #1: I can skip it because I am not exposed to the sun a lot.
Most of the time people believe they can pass on sunscreen application because they are not exposed to the sun for a long duration in the day. UV rays are reflected off sand, snow and water because of which even if you are in the shade you can get sunburned, making it necessary to apply sunscreen irrespective of the amount of time you stay exposed to the sun.

Myth #2: Sunscreen blocks the body from absorbing Vitamin D.
It is not necessary that to absorb vitamin D you need to bask in the sun the entire day, doing regular outdoor activities exposes us enough to the sun for vitamin D development. Sunscreen prevents sunburns by partially blocking UVB rays thus lowering the vitamin D formation and not by completely blocking it.

Myth #3: The SPF in my makeup is enough.
The SPF content in the few spots of your base makeup that you apply is inadequate to provide you the necessary protection against harmful UV rays. An additional sunscreen protection of at least SPF 30 is required with reapplication in every 2-3 hours. The SPF in your makeup can be considered as an add on bonus but not your main protective shield.

Myth #4: You don't need sunscreen on a cloudy day, rainy day or in winter.
Clouds filter out sunlight but do not filter out UV rays. As per a research clouds filter out 20% of UV rays making us get exposed to 80% of harmful UV rays. It has been commonly misunderstood that on a cloudy day, rainy day or even in winter no sunscreen in required. However, during the day time in any weather the UV rays are still present making it really harmful for your skin. Also, as discussed in Myth #1 UV rays are reflected off sand, snow and water making it rather more harmful.

Myth #5: The higher the SPF the better the protection.
It has been said the higher the SPF content in a product the better protection it provides. However, sunscreens which have SPF30 tend to extend the best kind of protection as per a research. The difference in terms of protection between a product with SPF 50 and SPF 30 is minimal with the former one having more chemicals in it. Hence, it is recommended to use a product with SPF30 for everyday wear and SPF50 for when you are aware that you will be exposed for a longer time.

Now that I have helped you bust some of your sunscreen myths, I will be talking about my current favourite sunscreen by La Roche Posay named Anthelios XL Anti Shine Dry Touch SPF 50+ review. Keep reading on to check out the detailed review of this product..

Results:

  • The product comes in a sturdy, squeeze easy tube with a flip top cap that is convenient to carry around. The sunscreen has a white, gel based creamy texture that spreads easily on application and does not leave any white cast behind.
  • The product is not overly runny and being a gel cream the product does not tend to dry out my skin but leaves my skin with a non-matte, smooth finish making it perfect for combination-oily skin type. I would however, recommend people with dry skin to try the other versions of La Roche Posay Anthelios XL SPF 50+ that are better suited for them.
  • In the past I have come across many sunscreens that leave your skin feeling greasy and shiny after application however, this product gets easily absorbed within 5 minutes with no greasiness or shine behind.
  • I have used it prior to makeup application and this product keeps my skin shine free for a longer duration because of which my makeup stays put for a long duration.
    • The product claims to be fragrance free but to an extent it has a faint chemical scent that disappears almost immediately after application. Also, this scent is not at all bothersome or much noticeable so people who are sensitive to scents need not worry.
    • The product is non comedogenic meaning it doesn't block pores and is also water resistant in nature. Also, not to avoid the obvious but the biggest benefit of this product is the SPF 50+ UVB and UVA protection that it extends.
    • An add on benefit is that in spite of having an SPF 50+ protection this product is paraben free.

Tip for the day: Most of the people do not use adequate amount of sunscreen lotion and the rest do not reapply every 2 hours as required. For best results it is advised to apply the lotion 15-20 minutes before going outside as this will provide enough time to be absorbed into the skin.

    10. Interesting post! Do you think that my skin is enough protected with a make up foundation with 50 SPF? Or if I use a Primer with 30 SPF?

    11. Such a great post! Sun protection is soo important especially now, in summer. I think taht it's important to inform people about that because a lot of them don't pay enough attention to protecting their skin from sun when it is really soo important.
