Hello Chicsters!

As women, we can talk about everything under the sun but the one topic most women shy away from is intimate hygiene. A few weeks ago we shared an Introductory article on Menstrual cups, today we will be sharing the benefits of using Menstrual cups and the different ways to cleanse them.
Menstrual Cups: Benefits of using them & 3 ways to clean them

What is a Menstrual cup?

A menstrual cup is a feminine hygiene product that is inserted into the vagina during menstruation. The cup collects the fluid and prevents any kind of transfer onto clothes. They are mostly made of medical-grade silicone and are flexible in nature. Their bell shape and flexibility helps in stress-free insertion and removal.

What are the benefits of using a Menstrual cup?

  1. Menstrual cups are budget friendly: Since each cup can last around 6-10months with proper care it surely is a budget friendly option compared to tampons & sanitary napkins.
  2. Menstrual cups are safer to use: As these cups collect fluid rather than absorbing them, they are less likely to give any bacterial infection.
  3. Menstrual cups are eco-friendly: Since these cups are reusable, you are reducing the waste contribution to the environment.
  4. Menstrual cups can hold more fluid: Each menstrual cup can hold 23ml to 30ml of fluid. Tampons can hold upto one third of that amount and Sanity Napkins can hold upto half of that.
  5. Menstrual cups are travel friendly: As these cups can go upto 12hours without a change it’s easier to travel while using them. You also don’t have to worry about menstrual odour as the fluid is collected within the body and doesn’t get exposed to air unlike sanitary napkins.

How to cleanse your menstrual cup?

Reusable Menstrual cups should be cleansed post every use. Any Reusable Menstrual cup can last 6-10 months with the proper care. There many be many different ways to clean a Menstrual cup but these 3 methods are the ones I usually abide by:
Cleaning with a Menstrual Cup Cleaner: The quickest and most effective way to clean a menstrual cup is with a menstrual cup cleanser. The one that I trust is the Everteen Menstrual Cup Cleanser. This product contains 100% Natural, Food-grade active ingredients that have anti-fungal & anti-bacterial properties. The plant-based formula is pH balanced and yet tough on the stains. This cleanser comes with a soft-bristled brush that helps get rid of stains without harming the cup in any way.

Cleaning with Hot Water: Even if you have been using a cleanser between uses you will still have to sterilise the menstrual cup at the end of a cycle. The quickest way to sanitise your cup is by placing it in boiling water for 1-2minutes. However, you need to be careful with this process as keeping the cup in boiling water for too long can cause the silicone to soften.

Cleaning with a pH balanced soap: While using soap to cleanse your menstrual cup make sure that the soap you are using is pH balanced. Be sure to use a gentle, fragrance-free soap to avoid any irritation. You can also use an intimate wash to cleanse your menstrual cup.
